The total area of arable
land decreases while the area of cereals increases
The total
area of arable land in Sweden has been estimated to 2,630,500 ha in 2008. This
is a decrease by 17,500 ha (-0.7 %) compared to the year 2007. The area of
cereals has been estimated to 1,087,700 ha in 2008, which is an increase by
97,600 ha (+9.9 %) since the year 2007. Barley and oats increased their areas,
wheat is about the same as last year while other cereals decreased. The highest
percentage increase in area between the years 2007 and 2008 is oats with 24.2
%. The total
area of pasture and green fodder has been estimated to 1,158,900 ha, which
is an increase by 31,300 ha (+2.8 %) since the year 2007. Since the year 2005,
the area of pasture and green fodder has increased by 93,000 ha (+8.7 %). The area of
rape and turnip rape has increased by 1,700 ha (+1.9 %) between the years 2007
and 2008. The area of
fallow land decreased by 134,500 ha (-47,9 %) between the years 2007 and 2008.
Sweden has not had such a small area of fallow land since the year before
Sweden entered the EU in 1995. The area of pasture and
meadows decreases
The total
area of pasture and meadows has been estimated to 457,700 hectares in the year
2008. This is a decrease with 31,600 ha (-6.5 %) between the years 2007 and
2008. Pasture and meadows consists of grazed alvar, forest pasture, mountain
pasture and mown meadow. The number of holdings
decreases
The number
of holdings which are included in the Swedish farm register in the year 2008
has been estimated to 71,611, which is 998 fewer than in the year of 2007. This
is equivalent to a decrease by 1 %. The decrease of holdings is highest
among the holdings with arable land between 30 and 50 ha. The biggest and the
smallest holdings are increasing in number between the years 2007 and 2008. List of tables
