Bringing dogs and cats from UK, Ireland or Malta

The requirements described below apply to direct import from Ireland, Malta and the UK of all dogs and cats, no matter their age. Direct import means that the animal arrives by air or by ship directly in Sweden. If the flight makes an intermediate landing, this still counts as direct import provided that the animal does not leave the airport.

On the other hand, if the animal is brought to Sweden via other EU Member States, if you're traveling through another EU country, or if you leave the airport in another EU country, you need to comply with the general import requirements for dogs and cats from the EU. More information about the EU-requirements. More information about the EU-requirements.

You need a licence if you bring puppies and kittens via Kastrup

If you want to bring a puppy or a kitten younger than 3 months from the UK, Ireland or Malta via Kastrup Airport in Denmark, you need to apply for an import licence. Puppies and kittens with a Swedish import licence may pass customs at Kastrup if they are to continue to Sweden via the Oresound bridge. Our page on importing puppies and kittens has more information about how to apply for a licence.

The animal must be identified

The animals must be identified by a clearly legible, permanent tattoo or by a microchip of ISO standard 11784 or 11785. The tattoo or microchip is to be applied by a veterinarian. The identity number must be included in all documents and in the pet passport.

From 3 July 2011, the rules will change so that only microhips may be used for identifying animals travelling to or within the EU.

You need a pet passport for the animal

The passport must be issued in the country where the animal comes from. If you buy a dog or cat, ask the seller to get a passport from his or her veterinarian. In the passport, the veterinarian notes all relevant vaccinations and treatments carried out on the animal. You must not enter any information yourself in the passport, but you can show old vaccination certificates to your veterinarian so that he or she can note them in the passport.

The passport is a valuable document. If you lose it or it gets destroyed you need to get a new one.

Cargo and trade animals need a health check before departure

Animals that are transported as cargo, i.e. not inside the cabin or as excess weight luggage, as well as animals that are to be sold after being imported into Sweden, count as trade animals. The same applies if you bring more than five animals. Trade animals must be inspected by an official veterinarian or an export veterinarian before being brought into Sweden. This health check shall take place no more than 24 hours before departure.

The veterinarian shall make a note in the pet passport that the health check has been carried out. Please contact the veterinary authority in the country you are in, in order to find a suitable official veterinarian.

You have to report to customs

Exactly how you are to report to customs depends on where you cross the border. For more information, please consult the Swedish Customs' websitelänk till annan webbplats.

Dogs need to be registered

Dogs brought permanently to Sweden need to be registered in the central dog register. Please contact our Customer Service for more information.
