Veterinary licence

You can apply for a Swedish veterinary licence if you have a veterinary degree from:
  • the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU
  • an approved university in another EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland
  • a country that is not a member of the EU or the EEA, provided that you have completed additional training called TUVE in Sweden.

If you have a Swedish veterinary degree

Before you can apply for a Swedish veterinary licence, you must first request your degree diploma from the SLU. Please use the form in the right-hand column, and enclose the diploma as well as verification of your identity.

Please submit your application to the Board of Agriculture, Division for Feed and Health, 551 82 Jönköping, Sweden.

If you have a veterinary degree from an EU country or from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland

If you have a veterinary degree from an approved veterinary university in an EU country or in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, you can apply for a Swedish veterinary licence, provided that you are a citizen of one of those countries. You can find a list of approved veterinary universities in the annex to the Swedish regulation on veterinary licence for people with foreign qualifications.

Please use the form Veterinary Licence Application (EU/EEA), and enclose the following data or certificates:

  • Full name, date and place of birth, and current address;
  • Your veterinary diploma;
  • Reliable proof of identity. If you have become a Swedish citizen you enclose an extract of the population register, and if not you enclose a copy of your passport attested by the relevant authority.
  • Certificate from the central veterinary authority confirming that you have conducted yourself in accordance with veterinary legislation and not been subject to disciplinary measures, i.e. a so-called letter of good standing. This certificate must not be older than three months.
  • Receipt showing that you have paid for your veterinary licence.
All documents must be presented in their originals. If you use copies, they must be attested by the university or the authority in the country that issued the document, or in the country of your most recent residence. The person who attests that the copy matches the original shall state his or her address and phone number, in addition to their signature and clarification of signature.

If you have a veterinary degree from any other country

If you want to apply for a Swedish veterinary licence, you first need to complete additional training given particularly to veterinarians from countries outside the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. This training is called TUVE. You also need sufficient language skills. Before you can be accepted to this course, the Board of Agriculture will evaluate your foreign veterinary diploma. You can find more information in the right-hand column.

Working as a veterinarian during a temporary stay in Sweden

If you intend to work in Sweden during a temporary stay, you need to notify the Board of Agriculture. You must be able to present a certificate showing that you have veterinary qualifications and work as a veterinarian in your home country or in the country where you got your diploma.

A temporary stay is no more than a few weeks long. If you intend to work as a veterinarian for a longer period of time, you need to apply for a Swedish veterinary licence.
